Nevada License Plate

What is a Nevada License Plate?

A Nevada license plate is a state registration plate that links a vehicle to its owner in the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles system. The DMV sets license plate standards, manages their issuance, and operates offices throughout the state where residents can directly register vehicles.

The current general issue license plate is the “Home Means Nevada” design, introduced in late 2016. Black embossed letters are set against a landscape background depicting Nevada’s desert and mountains, in accordance with NRS 482.265.

Types of License Plates in Nevada

  • General license plates use the “Home Means Nevada” design and are automatically assigned upon registration. Replacement of a license plate costs $5 at any DMV office.
  • Over 40 special designs cover charities, sports teams, and landmarks. Charity and collegiate plates start at $61 for sequential numbering, with annual renewal at $30. Personalized versions of these designs cost $96 initially and $50 for renewal.
  • Personalized prestige plates on a standard background are available through the Nevada DMV’s personalized plate program in accordance with NRS 482.3667.
  • Nevada issues veteran plates for disabled veterans, former POWs, Pearl Harbor survivors, Purple Heart recipients, Congressional Medal of Honor holders, and Gold Star family members. Most require a DD-214 and must be ordered through a DMV office.
  • Classic vehicle, classic rod, and old timer plates serve collectors, limited to vehicles at least 25, 20, or 40 years old respectively and restricted to 5,000 miles per year.

What Vehicles Require License Plates in Nevada?

Every motor vehicle and trailer operated on Nevada roads must be registered according to Section 482 NRS. New residents must register within 30 days of establishing residency or obtaining a Nevada driver’s license, whichever comes first, according to NRS 482.385.

  • Passenger vehicles receive two plates and pay a registration fee of $33, plus a government services tax based on the vehicle’s initial MSRP. Counties may add an additional government services tax.
  • Motorcycles have one rear plate. The base registration fee is $33, plus $6 for safety, which funds Nevada Rider training programs.
  • A fee of $27 covers travel trailers. Standard trailers and semitrailers pay $12 if the unloaded weight is 1,000 pounds or less, or $24 if it exceeds this threshold.
  • Motor trucks weighing up to 6,000 pounds pay $33; the fee increases to $38 for 6,000 to 8,499 pounds, then to $48 for 8,500 to 10,000 pounds according to NRS 482.480.

License Plate Rules in Nevada

  • Two plates are required for passenger vehicles, one in front and one in back. Motorcycles, mopeds, and trailers receive one rear plate. According to NRS 482.275(2), if the manufacturer did not equip the vehicle with a front bracket or any other means of mounting a plate, the front plate is optional.
  • Each plate must be securely fastened, at least 12 inches off the ground, clearly visible, and free from foreign materials at all times according to NRS 482.275(4). Plates displayed loosely in a window or by any unsecured method are prohibited. Readability must be maintained at 100 feet in daylight and 110 feet under headlights at night.

Is Driving Around with No License Plate in Nevada Illegal?

Yes. Operating or parking a vehicle without the required plates violates NRS 482.275. Plates must be current for the active registration period and securely attached.

Displaying a fake plate, an altered plate, or a plate assigned to another vehicle falls under separate prohibitions in NRS 482.275 and NRS 482.555. Knowingly falsifying registration documents is punishable as a gross misdemeanor, not a simple misdemeanor.

What is the Penalty for Driving Without a License Plate in Nevada?

Penalties for violating Section 482 start with routine fines but escalate into actual criminal liability for deliberate fraud. The levels below reflect this escalation.

  • Any violation of Section 482 not classified elsewhere is a misdemeanor according to NRS 482.555(1)(b), carrying up to a $1,000 fine and up to 6 months in jail according to NRS 193.150.
  • Failure to register as a new resident incurs a $1,000 fine according to NRS 482.385(6). Providing proof of registration at a hearing may reduce this fine to $200.
  • Falsifying a registration application, title document, or dealer’s report of sale is a gross misdemeanor according to NRS 482.555(1)(a), punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 364 days in jail.
  • Driving with a suspended registration is a separate misdemeanor according to NRS 482.456, with fines ranging from $500 to $1,000 and jail terms from 60 to 180 days.
  • Penalties for late registration, including monthly late fees and a 10% penalty on overdue taxes, run concurrently with the above display violations according to the fee schedule in Section 482 NRS.
